标题: Multi-scale study of the synergy between human activities and climate change on urban heat islands in China

摘要: Rapid urbanization amplifies the Urban Heat Island (UHI) effect, heightening the risk of extreme heat in cities. Sustainable development, focused on the harmonious coexistence of humans and nature, is key to mitigating UHI impacts. Despite this, the study of how human activities and climate change interact to affect thermal environments is lacking. This study takes a multi-scale approach to uncover the causal links between human actions, climate change, and UHI intensity. Using machine learning, we explore the complex interplay of factors driving UHI intensity and reveal the following insights: (1) Carbon emissions are a significant driver of increased UHI at larger scales; (2) The UHI effect is linked to increased evapotranspiration and temperatures; (3) Climate change is a dominant force in UHI effects at larger scales, while human activities take the lead at medium and small scales; (4) The cooling benefits of green spaces vary by region and can even have adverse effects; (5) Rainfall and temperature significantly influence UHI intensity, with distinct thresholds, particularly at provincial and municipal levels, where smaller scales show higher sensitivity. These findings offer strategic guidance for alleviating UHI effects across different scales in China.
